A rare large ‘Fungo’ or Zaffiro 4000 table Lamp by Massimo Vignelli for Venini, Italy 1950s.

Dimensions: height (35.5 cm), diameter (25 cm). This is the largest version.

Though the achievements of the Italian born designer Massimo Vignelli (1931) are world-famous, his name isn’t that well known though. After graduating from both the Politecnico di Milano and the Università di Architettura of Venice, Vignelli thought design at the Illinois Institute of Technology between 1958 and 1960. Back in Italy, Vignelli and his wife Lella founded their own design and architecture studio in Milan. After returning to the US in 1965, Vignelli was one of the founding members of the groundbreaking design firm Unimark. After Unimark was dissolved in 1971 Vignelli and his wife established Vignelli Associates in New York. During his career Vignelli designed products, interiors and corporate identity schemes for countless clients, like American Airlines, Ford, Knoll and the New York and Washington subway systems.

The table light offered was designed in 1955, early in Vignelli’s career, when he lived in Venice. The lamp is executed in the incamiciato technique by Venini, one of the outstanding art glass companies on the Venetian island of Murano.
