Without a doubt Hans J. Wegner (1914-2007) is one of the greatest Danish designers of all time. Together with the works of protagonists like Arne Jacobsen, Poul Kjaerholm and Poul Henningsen, Wegner’s designs became synonymous with ‘Danish Design’. Wegner’s creative output stands out both in quality and quantity: as he left a lasting legacy of over 1000 (!) different pieces. Among them lighting designs are relatively rare. The lamp offered belongs to the ‘Opala’ series, a range which was originally designed for a hotel in Copenhagen. The name ‘Opala’ refers both to the opaque quality of the acrylic shade and the type of light bulb Wegner initially intended to be fitted to the fixture. This particular 25” model is the largest version Louis Poulsen issued and the rarest too, as production was ceased already years ago.
